The proposed ordinance would affect businesses such as SeaWorld, Petco Park, Pechanga Arena, and the San Diego Convention Center, many of which are owned by out-of-state corporations. While supporters argue the increase is necessary for workers to afford living in San Diego, the local Chamber of Commerce warns it could lead to higher prices or job cuts. The council is expected to vote on the measure soon, with the new wage potentially taking effect at the start of the year if passed.

Minimum wage employees at hotels and convention centers nearby could soon see a big bump in their hourly rate. The city is discussing raising their wages by nearly 50 percent. Hotel workers rallied for a $25 minimum wage last year. They later went on a month-long strike demanding higher pay. Those employees could be getting what they asked for at next week's city council meeting. We hear from people on a daily basis who are working full-time jobs, sometimes multiple jobs and they can't afford to live here. Council member Sean Ilo Rivera is proposing a $25 minimum wage for thousands of hospitality workers in the city of San Diego. This would apply to large hotels, amusement parks and event centers. Specific businesses that could be affected are SeaWorld, Petco Park, Pechanga Arena and the San Diego Convention Center. This ordinance would apply to businesses that are overwhelmingly owned and operated by out-of-state multinational corporations. Ilo Rivera says he cannot guarantee this ordinance won't raise inflation, and that's a major concern of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce. The chamber sent out this text to people within the city of San Diego, arguing that the wage hike would make Padres games and concerts more expensive. Money doesn't grow on trees, you either have to raise prices or cut jobs to pay for this. Chamber President and CEO Chris Cate says Ilo Rivera's proposal could also affect San Diego-owned businesses, like restaurants and kayak rentals operating within hotels. They're actually everyday San Diegans who are business owners who are going to have to pay for this. This proposal will go before city council members at their meeting next Tuesday.
