San Diego-based non-profits are stepping up to help federal workers who are impacted by the federal government shutdown.

San Diego Food Bank and Jewish Family Service have organized food distribution efforts to support federal workers and service members affected by the ongoing government shutdown. The initiative includes weekly drive-thru food distributions, with each household receiving approximately 35 to 40 pounds of food, including fruits, vegetables, shelf-stable items, and proteins.

The organizations aim to alleviate some of the financial pressure caused by missed paychecks, allowing families to redirect their limited resources to other essential needs such as rent, transportation, and medical expenses. The effort is intended to ensure that no one has to worry about food during this period of uncertainty.

We want to make sure we're providing a well-balanced diet. Casey Castillo is the CEO of the San Diego Food Bank. Well we're concerned about thousands of federal workers and service members that may go without a paycheck. We jumped in and I wanted to make sure we were ready to respond. This truck is carrying 4,000 pounds of food. We'll be providing fruits and vegetables, shelf-stable commodities and proteins. All of that heading here. Jewish Family Service in Kearney Mesa. We jumped in and decided to open up our drive-thru food distribution. Tom Stewart is with the nonprofit. We're gonna be doing this distribution every Wednesday until the shutdown ends and we estimate that we can serve in that two hours about a hundred households. We're partnering with the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank. They're helping us, you know, source extra food to beef up what we'll be able to provide. We will be shooting for like 35 to 40 pound packages of food. These 40 pounds of food can provide more than just a full fridge and pantry, but clear out some of the stress people are going through at the moment. They can free up some of their cash, be it to go to rent, put gas in the car, take their kids to school, after-school activities, all of those things, medical bills. We don't want people to have to worry about food. And really come through during an emergency for these families. Ryan Hill, ABC 10 News.
