De-extinction group Colossal Biosciences ﻿have announced the establishment of Colossal Australia, expanding a long-standing partnership with the University of Melbourne. The project will attempt to bring the Tasmanian Tiger back to life.

Scientists are making strides in efforts to revive the Tasmanian tiger, or thylacine, which has been extinct for nearly a century. US-based biotechnology company Colossal, valued at $10 billion, is leading the project and has sequenced the thylacine's entire genetic code, aiming to recreate the species.

Colossal has chosen Australia as a key location for its work, citing the country's unique ecosystems and high rate of mammal extinctions. The technology being developed may also be used to protect other native animals by genetically altering their DNA to withstand threats from invasive species and climate change. While similar advances have been made with other extinct animals, scientists caution that reintroducing the thylacine to the wild remains a complex challenge.

Ever since the Tassie tiger was listed as extinct almost 100 years ago, scientists have dreamed of bringing the species back to life, and now those fantasies are within reach. There's just so many opportunities in the next 5 to 10 years to really drive this research into places that we never thought possible. Colossal is a $10 billion company based in Texas. It has its sights set on righting some of Earth's greatest mistakes, including bringing back the woolly mammoth, the dodo bird, and Tasmania's carnivorous marsupial. We've sequenced the entire genetic code of a thylacine so we know exactly what it is that we need to be able to recreate to bring that species back. Colossal has chosen Australia to expand its footprint due to our unique ecosystems, but the project also boasts some Hollywood-style power. We've had many meetings and outings with some of the henwares in the conservation space but really they have a deep passion for really stabilising the Tasmanian ecosystem. The technology which may bring the thylacine back from extinction could also be used to protect other native animals from facing the same fate by genetically altering their DNA to protect them from invasive species and changing weather patterns. Australia has the highest rate of mammal extinctions of any country in the world. Scientists have already brought the dire wolf back from extinction and used genetic material to create woolly mice, but there may be a long way to go before we see a Tassie tiger once again roaming the wilderness.
