Jewish groups are planning separate Pride celebrations amid concerns over the San Diego festival headliner.

Jewish organizations in San Diego have decided to hold separate Pride celebrations, citing concerns over safety and discomfort following the selection of Kehlani, a vocal supporter of Palestine, as the headliner for the main Pride festival. More than 30 Jewish groups have withdrawn from the official Pride events and are organizing their own collective Jewish Pride Weekend, which includes a Shabbat dinner that has already attracted over a thousand RSVPs.

Organizers of the main Pride event have stated that they do not endorse the political positions of performers and uphold free expression. Community leaders hope that future Pride events will be more inclusive, allowing all groups to celebrate together.

The San Diego Pride Parade will roll through this area tomorrow, and Hillcrest is under construction as the neighborhood prepares for the big event. But for the first time ever, Jewish organizations are planning their own separate celebrations, raising concerns over their safety at Pride festivities. There are a few critical elements to Pride Weekend. Love and acceptance, not having to hide who you are. Hans Enyart says a lot of that was missing for the LGBTQ plus Jewish community this year. Many felt uncomfortable participating in San Diego Pride after the board chose Kehlani to headline this year's festival. Kehlani has been a vocal supporter of Palestine, sometimes starting chants against Israel during performances. It has been really important for us and other leaders in the community to have spaces where people can celebrate all of their identities without having to shrink one in exchange for safety or acceptance. Organizers say they don't endorse or adopt the political positions of any performer, and they honor the importance of free expression. In response, more than 30 organizations pulled out of Pride. They've decided to put on San Diego's first collective Jewish Pride Weekend at the same time as all the other festivities. For Jewish people to feel like they couldn't be a part of this for safety reasons, we were like, well, we have to do something else for them. We want them to know that they are embraced, that they are welcomed, and that we celebrate them for who they are. Heidi Gantwork, president and CEO of the Jewish Federation, says more than a thousand people have already RSVP'd to the first event, Shabbat dinner, on Friday night. It is heartwarming and it is such a wonderful antidote to some of what we've been dealing with. I would love next year that we can all come back and be together again.
