The region accounted for 51% of global terrorism-related deaths, up from 48% in 2023. The deaths are often at the hands of groups like Janim, one of the world's four most prolific terror organisations. In Niger, over 400 lives were lost in terrorism last year. Insurgents targeted villages, military posts and public gatherings. After a brief improvement in 2022, Niger has seen a dangerous reversal in the past two years. Nigeria also suffered with 180 deaths, including the devastating attack on Mafa village in Yobe state, where 100 to 150 were killed and several others wounded. In April, a clash between Iswaf and Brother Haram in Bono state claimed 80 lives. Meanwhile in Mali, a brutal attack on a gendarmerie school in Bamako left 60 soldiers dead. Janim claimed responsibility. The United Nations reports that terror attacks were relentless in 2025, with the death toll continuing to rise across the Sahel region.
