Siksika Nation celebrated the repatriation of a pair of important spiritual and cultural artifacts from the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa to the Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park.

The Siksika Nation has celebrated the return of two sacred ribstones, spiritual artifacts marked with ancient etchings, from the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa to the Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park. These stones, which are deeply connected to the Blackfoot people's traditions and their relationship with the buffalo, were removed in the late 1800s and early 1900s during a period when Indigenous culture and language were being suppressed.

Community leaders and elders traveled to Ottawa to help identify the stones' origins, emphasizing that repatriation is not only about returning objects, but also about restoring knowledge and cultural identity. This event follows other recent repatriations, including a sacred stone and regalia belonging to Chief Crowfoot. Efforts are ongoing to build partnerships with museums to bring more cultural items back to the Siksika Nation.

Sacred ribstones return to Siksika Nation after more than a century

Marked with ancient etchings, these rib stones are a spiritual connection to the land and to the buffalo, which the Blackfoot people depended on for survival. I know people would go up there and they would make offerings and they'd wait for the buffalo. This is definitely a sacred and historical powerful event. Shannon Bearchief, the CEO of Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park, says this is a great homecoming. Why they were taken, I believe it was just like everything else. Language, culture that was stripped from the Blackfoot people. It was also just another act of removing them rocks to remove the meditation and the prayer. It's believed the stones were removed in the late 1800s and early 1900s. A group including Elder Martin Heavyhead traveled to the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa earlier in the year to help identify where exactly the stones came from. Repatriation is a lot of things. It's not just repatriating objects. It's also repatriating knowledge, territory. It's repatriating our lives that have been taken away. Because of our past and our dealings with residential schools and just how our beliefs and our culture were treated by non-Native people. And for us to bring these home and to recount the significance of them to our people and to our future. It's important that we have them here to be able to tell that story. And for me it felt really good personally because it does tell us that we did exist and we lived here for a long time and we're still here. In 2023, a different sacred stone was returned to Siksika after sitting in a farmer's field in central Alberta since the early 1900s. A year earlier, regalia belonging to Chief Crowfoot who played a key role in the signing of Treaty 7 was repatriated. It had been housed at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter, England since 1878. Bearchief says Chief Crowfoot's dagger is returning this fall and she is starting to build partnerships with museums here in Alberta to bring more items home.
