The death toll from Afghanistan's worst earthquake in years jumped to over 1,100 with thousands more injured, as difficult terrain hindered rescue efforts in isolated villages of the country's mountainous eastern region.

A devastating earthquake has struck Afghanistan's Kunar province, resulting in more than 1,100 deaths and widespread destruction. The Taliban government, facing limited resources and damaged infrastructure, has appealed to the international community for urgent assistance.

Emergency aid is being delivered by helicopter as many roads remain blocked by landslides. The United Nations has released emergency funds, while India and China have pledged support. Many survivors are left to dig through rubble themselves due to a lack of official help. Afghanistan, located on major fault lines, is prone to such disasters, with this being the deadliest quake since a 2023 tremor that killed over 1,400 people.

Eagerly awaited, this Afghanistan military helicopter is bringing much-needed aid to a village in Kunar province. It's delivering medicine and will carry some of the injured to hospital. With many roads still cut off by landslides caused by the quake, it's the only way for help to reach some areas. But the Taliban government's capacity is limited. Residents are calling for outside assistance. A total of 25 people from my family were martyred and they are still under the rubble. I ask the international community to provide us with aid and Allah will grant them rewards. The United Nations has released emergency funds to assist. And India and China have also pledged support. The quake struck just before midnight on Sunday. Its shallow depth made it particularly deadly, destroying entire villages. Due to a lack of official assistance, many people have been forced to dig out their own loved ones from the rubble. It was dark. There was no light. Somebody lent me a lamp and then I used a shovel and a pickaxe to dig them out. There was no one to help because everyone was affected. So many people died in my village. Some are still buried. Whole families have died. Afghanistan is prone to earthquakes as the country sits on major fault lines where the Indian and Eurasian plates meet. This latest quake is the worst to hit the country since 2023, when a 6.3 magnitude tremor killed over 1,400 people.
