Russo-German relations are at a new low after the German government announced on Wednesday that Russia will have to close four out of its five consultants across Germany.

Russia to close four consulates in Germany

The German government is closing four of Russia's five consulates in the country. Only the Russian embassy in Berlin and one consulate will remain open. This is a retaliatory measure after Moscow recently restricted the number of German diplomats allowed to stay in Russia to 350. German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Christopher Berger has stressed that by this move, the Kremlin only escalated tensions. He's called it an unjustified decision that's forcing the government to make major cuts across the board. In the midst of a diplomatic standoff, Germany will also reduce its open diplomatic headquarters in Russia to a minimum. Berlin will shut consulates in Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk and Kaliningrad by November. Only the embassy in Moscow and the consulate in St. Petersburg will remain. This is the latest blow in relations between the two nations since Russia launched its war in Ukraine.
