Dubbed Zapad or West in Russian, these maneuvers happen every four years, but this is the first time since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Countries on NATO's eastern flank are particularly unsettled by this show of force in light of last week's events. Overnight last Tuesday into Wednesday, several Russian drones entered Polish airspace before being destroyed. Four days later, an intrusion detected above Romania, another NATO member. Within the alliance, some believe their defenses are not adequately prepared to counter massive drone attacks. NATO spent millions to down those cheap Russian drones. Ukraine is not a NATO member, but says it can share its experience from battling tens of thousands of Russian drones. We are ready to teach all our partners how to defend themselves. Of course, NATO has Patriot missiles, other systems and powerful fighter jets. But in Ukraine, we have much cheaper, more massive and systematic solutions against Russian drones. It's important not to waste time. Several allies, including France and Germany, have already taken action, sending aircraft to NATO's eastern flank. And after getting its first taste of modern drone warfare, the alliance announced it is strengthening its anti-drone defenses.
