Romania is experiencing severe labour shortages as more than a quarter of its population has migrated to work in wealthier European countries. Many migrants, such as Vasily, face difficult working conditions, limited legal protections, and, in some cases, life-changing injuries. Vasily, who worked in meat factories in Belgium and the Netherlands, suffered a serious workplace accident and struggled for years to receive compensation due to contractual ambiguities between Romanian and Dutch employers.

The mass migration has left Romanian villages and towns depopulated, with some areas losing over 70% of their residents. While migrants send back vital foreign currency, the lack of local job opportunities and insufficient support for returning workers have raised concerns about the true cost of freedom of movement within the European Union.

Romanian migrant workers struggle for support

Back home in Romania, 35-year-old Vasily is partially paralyzed and barely able to speak. Aged 18, he left for Western Europe, earning a salary he would never get at home. He worked in meat factories in Belgium and the Netherlands and met his girlfriend Tatiana. Life seemed good until that day in March 2022. His boss told him to work harder and faster, so he tried. He always worked hard, but that time he accidentally stabbed himself and the knife cut his groin. His skull needed to be lifted due to the loss of blood. Because he worked on a Romanian contract for a Dutch company, nobody took responsibility. For three years, the couple fought for financial compensation. He is destroyed. His life is destroyed. He cannot use his hands, he cannot speak. Thank God he is still alive, but God knows what he can do with his life. Vasily is one of millions living in poor areas trying their luck abroad, and one of hundreds returning broke and broken. Migrants from Romania bring back vital foreign currency, but often suffer from poor working conditions and fewer protections than local workers. My impression is that we want to have them in this weak legal position as a way to reduce the cost, to have the workforce flexible and to make them dependent in a way or another on the work available there in this sector. This is what freedom of movement inside the European Union looks like in Romania. Depopulated villages and towns left by people now earning three or four times as much in richer European countries. A freedom that has come at such a high price that some say Europe's single market should not only provide freedom of movement, but also a freedom to stay. In Ani Noasa, more than 70% of the population has left after the mines closed. The authorities should provide jobs, open factories. If there is no work, people will leave. I can sit in my shop for hours and nobody comes and nobody crosses the street. Vasily finally got good news after an insurance company in the Netherlands decided to compensate him.
