These laws allow employees to switch off from work communications outside their scheduled hours, a right already granted to those working for larger companies. While the changes are designed to improve productivity and work-life balance, some sectors, such as disability care, may find it harder to fully disconnect due to the nature of their work. Recent polling indicates that more than half of employers have received complaints related to the right to disconnect, with Western Australia reporting the highest number. Small business groups have expressed concerns about the potential impact on business operations and the increasing costs of compliance.

They really respect that we need that like notice and time off. 22 year old Amelie Rudd says her previous employers have been far more demanding when off the clock. I've had the experience before of feeling like I need to put in way more mental energy and like time into just a casual position where I really shouldn't have to do that responsibility. But from today around 5 million Australians working for small businesses, that is with fewer than 15 staff, can now switch off after their shift is over or part of their right to disconnect. That promotes productivity, it promotes employee engagement. We've seen great steps forward and people reporting that they no longer are on leave and getting bings on their phone about roster changes, about covering shifts. But not everyone can clock off entirely. There are not too many disability workers that get the right to disconnect because they think about the people they support all of the time. These laws have already been in place for a year for millions of Australian workers hired by big business. But recent polling has revealed more than half of all employers have received complaints over workers and their right to disconnect. Western Australia interestingly received the most complaints around the right to disconnect. But it does reinforce the fact that individuals are really wanting to keep their personal life and work life separate. And tonight, small business groups warn the same could happen to them.
