You never know when love can sneak up on you— and at what age. That was certainly the case for a Richland County couple who recently tied the knot at the ages of 84 and 88.

Gisela Shoemaker, 84, and Hans Reich, 88, recently married after meeting at the Ohio Health Ontario Fitness Center, where they exercised together regularly. Both originally from Germany, they connected over their shared background and experiences, with friends encouraging their relationship.

After years of widowhood, the couple decided to marry at the Richland County Courthouse, followed by a celebration at the fitness center where they met. Their story highlights that it is never too late to find companionship and love, regardless of age.

How about that? News 5's Bob Jones shows us how a desire to stay healthy and a common heritage led to a decision to get married. Get a little closer, okay? Closer. Lap by lap and hand in hand, you'll find Gisela Shoemaker and Hans Reich walking on the track at the Ohio Health Ontario Fitness Center at least five days a week. Sometimes we come on Saturdays, then it's McDonald's day, pancakes. Hans first noticed Gisela a few years back at the fitness center. While he was walking, his eyes were drawn to her on a cardio machine. She was always in the first row. I kept looking over, but that's as far as it got. Hans is 88, Gisela 84. Both were born in Germany and moved to Northeast Ohio in the 50s and 60s respectively. Hans was married for 19 years before his wife passed away in the 80s. Gisela lost her husband of 51 years four years ago. Gisela says it was actually a friend of hers who convinced her to spend some time walking on this track with Hans, figuring they had so much in common and maybe, just maybe, there would be a connection. Well, we just really connected, and we had a lot of similar things, you know, in common. The courtship continued and grew stronger, and after living as a bachelor for four decades, Hans decided to pop the question. It's not that easy after being single for that long, and I said, okay, let's hitch. Let's get married. She said yes. They got rings, and last month at the Richland County Courthouse, they got married. Oh, I love him. I want to trade him in. He's a keeper? Absolutely. The next day, their friend, Jane Valladipina, threw them a wedding reception. I mean, it's just a real love story, which I just, I love it. The celebration took place where the couple met, the fitness center, warming the hearts of all the guests. There's still room in your heart for someone that you could love again, and I think that's the message to other people. Gisela and Hans both agree. I think it's beautiful. They feel their story proves it's never too late to find love. You've got to stay on your toes. You've got to be good. When asked to express how she feels in German, Gisela said this. Even their names sound like out of a storybook. So sweet. So cute. I love how they were each other's gym crush. Yeah. My little gym crush. Another reason to work out. You never know who you'll meet. All this is important. That's important for their health, too. That love that they have for each other and the companionship. Love it all. I like Hans' full head of hair. Yeah. And he, I noticed it. It is. Yeah. They know what they're doing. They're working out and finding love. And I don't want to bring it down because we are having such a lovely moment here. I mentioned it before, that now that we're getting to the end of August, this is that time of year where you really start to notice how much daylight we're losing. So today, we lost 2 minutes and 31 seconds of daylight.
