Fox's Ted Lindner takes a closer look. As we dive deeper into fall and temperatures start to drop, environmentalists say billions of birds across the country will be taken to the skies and heading for warmer climates. So of all the species we have moving across North America, we often say about 70% of birds are migratory. According to Dr. Kyle Horton of Purdue University, roughly 80% of these birds migrate at night. Usually they'll lift off around sunset and migration usually peaks about three to four hours after a local sunset. And the airways can get pretty crowded. During peak migration we're looking at hundreds of millions of birds sometimes approaching 1 billion birds flying on a given night. But experts like Dr. Horton are raising red flags, citing how the abundance of artificial light from homes, businesses, streets and beyond are throwing the birds off course. In just the last 100 to 200 years we've dramatically altered the nighttime skyline with lights at night. And migratory birds, like you might think of insects, are attracted to lights at night. And this attraction can be fatal. Collisions with usually windows is one of our problematic areas. But specialists say there's plenty that folks can do throughout the season to prevent foul play. We often advocate if you can turn off lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. that can help reduce some of that attraction. This could be dimming lights. It could be introducing warmer colored lights. Those are usually more orange in color. Pulling down the shades at night can reduce that glow coming out of a house or a building. Ted Linder, Fox News.
