ABC 10 News reporter Jane Kim tells us the purpose behind the business that's about more than food. It's pizza with purpose and at Pete's Abilities new location in Santee, adults with special needs are given not just a place to work but a sense of purpose and community. We just beat the lunch rush at Pete's Abilities in Santee and right now Cynthia Sanchez is doing her best cleaning up the tables after customers. What's your favorite part about working here? Taking the orders and cleaning. This is Cynthia's third job and says working here is a slice of heaven. How does it feel to be doing what you really like doing? I love it. I love it. Thank you Josh. And that's what inspired Pete's Abilities co-owner Josh Baker to start his business fresh out of the oven. His daughter Grace Baker has Down syndrome and Josh says it was hard for Grace to find a job after high school. He wanted to give her and others with special needs a place to work. We first covered the restaurant's opening day in Alpine in July. My wife and I thought about it, what does she love? She loves pizza and so we decided we want to start maybe a pizza restaurant. This is Pete's Abilities second location which is open in Santee on October 4th and Josh hopes it will give more people a slice of a better future. He says hundreds have wanted to apply. It was humbling because and it was eye-opening because to see like that it's pretty much the same story. I've been looking for years, I've been looking for months, I can't find a job, I just want to work. First-time customer Lisa Martinez says this business hits close to home. I have some special needs adults in my family. I would love to have something like this in their area. They're up near Seattle. This is amazing. Josh says he's planning to open two more locations in Miramar and Mira Mesa. As for Cynthia, she wants to stick around for another slice or two. I really hope I work here a long time until forever.
