What remains not obvious are the exact forces that led to this moment and how to assign them their proper weight. But the pressure to have a view comes immediately. Announce the correct take before the wrong one hardens, a risk being read as endorsing its opposite. Today, on 9-11, we're told never forget, which recognizes time can erase meaning. But in today's tragedies, the dynamic has inverted. Time does not erase meaning. Time itself gets erased. Meaning can't take hold. This rush gets supercharged by our digital environment. Our common ground for mourning has been replaced by a digital competition for narrative control. Balancing the human and the political becomes nearly impossible. To ignore the political element feels false, but to seize it instantly risks cheapening grief into grievance. A human reaction to a political opponent's death is not an endorsement of their life's work. Metaphysical certainty isn't required to acknowledge a pattern of violence and the anxiety it creates. Words have weight, and timing matters. Even a true statement said too soon can feel inhuman and undermine the very case it bolsters. But delaying the political questions for too long becomes its own form of neglect. Mr. Rogers told us in times of chaos to look for the helpers. But here, the helpers are those who practice restraint. What social media site shows us the people saying nothing, those not rushing to define the moment? The helpers create space, willing to live with the messy, conflicting emotions until they find meaning that feels true. Calling for restraint is not the same as excusing the inexcusable. To disagree better, we must first learn to wait better.
