More Australians are becoming distracted behind the wheel, according to an alarming report. The top causes of distraction have been revealed as road safety advocates call on drivers to concentrate.

A new survey has found that nine out of ten Australian motorists admit to driving while distracted, with common distractions including mobile phones, radios, eating, and cognitive factors such as daydreaming. The research also indicates that more than a third of drivers have experienced accidents or near misses due to distraction, and many say they would only change their behaviour after experiencing negative consequences firsthand.

The findings coincide with a rise in road fatalities, marking the deadliest annual toll since 2010. Road safety advocates are urging drivers to take greater responsibility for their actions, warning that apathy and a lack of self-reflection contribute to ongoing risks on Australian roads.

Amy's survey shows one in four drivers is preoccupied with their phones and smartwatches. Sixty per cent play with their radios or GPSs, 40 per cent are distracted by checking out crashes and broken down cars or other drivers and pedestrians. And almost two thirds eat or drink behind the wheel. Thirty eight per cent say they've been involved in an accident or near miss because they were distracted. The results were really surprising in that a quarter of drivers say that they would need to experience the negative consequences firsthand before they change their behaviour. So it would take a friend or a family member being in an accident before they actually change. We'll often hear people say, oh, it's OK, I'm only driving. In actual fact, you're operating a potentially lethal piece of equipment. From the 12 months to September, more than 1,300 people have died on our roads, making it the deadliest annual road toll since 2010. The Australian Road Safety Foundation believes drivers need to have greater regard for their actions. Sadly, I think there's real apathy that's out there at the moment from a lot of road users that somehow, you know, if a crash happens, it's somebody else's fault or it's the conditions Most of the time, we'll never shine the light on ourselves and go, well, actually, what could I have done to prevent that from happening?
