The first sightings of a manatee happened Saturday off the docks on the Shark River, and it was reportedly seen as recently as last night.

A manatee has been observed in the Shark River Lagoon in Belmar, New Jersey, in a rare but not unprecedented occurrence for the region. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center believes this could be the same manatee previously seen in Cape Cod and is monitoring its movements through public reports and photographs.

Experts highlight the need for warm water for manatees and warn that falling temperatures could pose a risk to the animal. Boaters are urged to slow down, give the manatee space, and avoid interacting with it, as it is a federally protected species. If water temperatures drop below 68 degrees and the manatee remains in the area, a relocation effort may be considered to ensure its safety.

An unusual visitor is calling Belmar home for the last several days. Experts hope it finds its way south before it gets too cold. News 12's Jim Murdoch is live in Belmar this afternoon. All eyes are looking for this manatee in the Shark River gem. They're so cute. Yeah, they're fascinating creatures, Della. So the first sightings of this manatee were right here in the Shark River Lagoon back on Saturday. We're hearing as recently as last night, the manatee was seen in other parts of the river. But the big question is, what is it doing here in Belmar? Well, the experts say, although rare, it's not typically unusual for a manatee to make it this far north. Take a look at some of the photos here from the weekend. These photos from the Valerio family. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center tells us this could be the same manatee that was seen in the Cape Cod region back in July as it slowly makes its way back south. The problem is, manatees need warm water. And with the longer nights and cooler days, the warm inlet and river water is now beginning to cool off. The Stranding Center says boaters need to be aware. Biggest thing I think you do is just give it plenty of room. Give it plenty of space. Don't try and feed it, water it, anything like that. They are federally protected. And just basically, if you're out on a boat, just slow down. Especially if you tend to be in the shallow waters in the back bay. So for now, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center is monitoring the location of this manatee through public sightings. So if you happen to see it, take some pictures, send them to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. Right now, they're only concerned if the water dips below 68 degrees. If the manatee is still up here, they tell me they might have to send a relocation team to bring it to warmer and safer waters. We'll have much more coming up at 5 o'clock.
