COVID-19 vaccines have started rolling out across Canada for high-risk groups, but in Quebec and Alberta people will have to pay up to $180 for the shot this year.

Quebec and Alberta have started charging residents for COVID-19 vaccinations, with fees reportedly reaching up to $180. While most Canadians continue to receive the vaccine for free, these two provinces have implemented new policies that limit free access, particularly in Alberta, where not all individuals over 65 are covered and shots are no longer offered in pharmacies. 

Quebec will still provide free vaccines to high-risk groups, including seniors, pregnant people, and those with underlying conditions. Health experts and pharmacists have raised concerns that charging for vaccines could undermine preventative health efforts and lead to higher long-term healthcare costs, as hospital stays for COVID-19 can exceed $24,000 per patient.

For most Canadians, COVID vaccines will be free except in Alberta and Quebec which plan to charge residents up to $180. Some pharmacists say offering free flu and COVID shots was a logical way to protect people. Santé Québec has been talking about is let's go preventative, preventative, preventative which I think is laudable and yet now we're going backwards with COVID. While Quebec still plans to cover all high-risk groups Alberta says not everyone over 65 will be covered and shots won't be offered in pharmacies citing waste and cost. It's just looking at that cost of the vaccine itself but ignoring those long-term costs. The average cost estimate of a COVID-19 hospital stay per patient is over $24,000. COVID-ICU admissions run more than double that. These older adults in Edmonton want the vaccine. I will go to Saskatchewan to visit family or BC to visit friends and I will get the shot there.
