A police investigation showed foreign nationals placed the pig heads that were found outside at least nine mosques in and around Paris on Tuesday, the Paris Prosecutor's office said on Wednesday.

French prosecutors have announced that foreign nationals were behind a series of incidents in which pig heads were placed outside mosques in Paris and its surrounding areas. Nine such incidents were reported, with one pig's head bearing the name 'Macron'. CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts linked the perpetrators to a vehicle with Serbian license plates, and they reportedly left the country immediately after the acts.

This is not the first time French religious institutions have been targeted; earlier in the year, Serbians were arrested for defacing a Paris synagogue. French authorities have previously accused Russia of attempting to incite discord in the country. France, home to significant Muslim and Jewish communities, has seen a rise in both Islamophobic and antisemitic incidents.

A grisly discovery outside a mosque in the 18th arrondissement of Paris on Tuesday. In total, nine incidents were reported overnight in Paris and its outskirts. On Wednesday, the Paris prosecutor's office announced that foreign nationals were responsible. The pig heads had been placed there by foreign nationals who immediately left the country with the clear intention of causing unrest within the nation. The statement cited an eyewitness account from a Normandy farmer who said that the individuals captured on CCTV cameras bought a dozen pigs from him, and that their car had Serbian license plates. It is not the first time this year that French religious institutions were targets of vandalism and desecration. In May, three Serbians were arrested after a Paris synagogue was defaced with paint. At the time, France accused Russia of attempting to sow discord within its borders. France is home to the largest Muslim community in the European Union, as well as the largest Jewish population outside of Israel and the United States. Both Islamophobic and antisemitic acts are on the rise in the country.
