Mepina defected from Hassan's ruling CCM party earlier this month. ACT called her disqualification shameful and said it raises questions about the electoral commission's integrity and independence. Leading opposition party Chadema was disqualified in April after it failed to sign the Electoral Code of Conduct as part of its call for electoral reform. Nominations for presidential candidates closed on Wednesday.
