The gunman behind the fatal shooting of two police officers in Porepunkah in Victoria's north-east has been identified as Dezi Freeman. The shooter has reportedly fled with his wife and two children, who he is holding hostage.

Police in Victoria are searching for Desi Freeman, who has been identified as the suspect in a fatal shooting incident in Porepunkah. Freeman, who is reportedly armed and considered dangerous, is believed to be accompanied by his wife and two children, who are being treated as hostages. 

Authorities have deployed significant resources, including aerial support, to locate Freeman. The public has been advised to stay indoors as the search continues. Victoria Police Union has expressed devastation over the loss of a colleague in the incident, and an official update from the police commissioner is expected.

Returning now to our top story, that police shooting in Victoria and Sophie Jacobson joins us live now from Pawpunka. Sophie, you can now tell us who this gunman is. Yeah, good evening, Sandra. Desi Freeman has been identified as the gunman and he remains on the run tonight and it's believed he is armed. He's well known to police. 10 News understands he identifies as a sovereign citizen. He's been in court many times here in Wangaratta and he's also attended numerous protests. He's got a wife and two children who are now being treated as hostages who are believed to be with him right now. He's also believed to be armed. There's much police presence here. Police are still in the air looking for him. Wayne Gatt, Victoria's head of the police union, put out a statement today. I'll read a small part of it now saying its members have been left devastated by the senseless murder of our mate, colleague and dearly loved family members. These brave officers went to work today like they did every day to protect the community. Their dedication to protecting the lives of others has cost them their own. Now to the public here, they're being asked to stay indoors until further notice. Mike Bush, our police commissioner here in Victoria, will be providing an update on the situation at 6pm tonight.
