Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep pain following a violent attack on Christian worshippers in Ituri province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The attack, attributed to the allied democratic forces linked to the so-called Islamic State, occurred during an all-night church vigil and resulted in the deaths of more than 40 people, including nine children.

The Pope entrusted the victims to God's mercy and called for prayers for the wounded and persecuted Christians worldwide. He urged local and international leaders to work together to prevent such tragedies. In addition, Pope Leo XIV marked the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Accords and welcomed pilgrims for Holy Year celebrations at the Vatican.

The victims were taking part in an all-night vigil in a church in Ituri province when fighters from the allied democratic forces attacked them with machetes. Nine of those killed were children. I renew my deep pain for the brutal terrorist attack that occurred on the night between 26th and 27th of July in Kumanda, in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where more than 40 Christians were killed in a church during a prayer vigil and in their homes. While I entrust the victims to God's loving mercy, I pray for the wounded and for Christians who around the world continue to suffer violence and persecution, exhorting all those with responsibility at the local and international level to collaborate to prevent similar tragedies. Leo also marked the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Accords that ushered in a new era of security and human rights. This week the Vatican welcomed tens of thousands of pilgrims for the Holy Year celebrations for young Catholics.
