Police in Brooklyn responded to reports of a violent patient at New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where the man had barricaded himself in a room on the eighth floor, armed with a makeshift sharp object. Officers attempted to subdue him with verbal commands and tasers, but when these measures failed and the man advanced toward them, police fired their weapons, resulting in his death.

The incident, which was captured on body-worn cameras, also left three people in need of medical treatment, though details of their injuries have not been released. This event is noted as the first police-involved shooting of the year and the first during Mayor Mamdani's term in Park Slope.

Marcy Jones, thank you for joining us. Police confirm a man is dead after being shot by officers inside of New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. Investigators say this all unfolded last night after reports of a violent man was barricaded inside. We've got News 12's Edric Robinson there this morning with the latest. Good morning, Edric. Tell us the updates you're learning. Yeah, Marcy, this is a hospital. It's meant to heal, but police say last night was a dangerous and chaotic scene. After an admitted patient started harming himself and others and threatening the lives of staff and responding officers now take a look at this weapon that police say they retrieved from that patient here. This is the makeshift sharp object. Police say the man was holding. We've blurted and it is very bloody. Police say their first received a 911 call at 530 last night for reports of a violent man with a knife. Inside the hospital, officers rushed to the 8th floor where they say the patient had barricaded himself inside a room, cutting himself, hurting others, and trapping another patient and a hospital security guard inside with him. Police went on to say that they saw blood on the walls and doors as officers spent several minutes giving verbal commands for the man to drop the weapon. They tell us that officers then deployed tasers multiple times, but they were not effective. And when the man advanced towards the officers with that weapon, they say they fired their guns. Police say the man was struck and pronounced dead a short time later. Now we spoke with a visitor who was inside there when she says everything suddenly locked down. Take a listen. I heard shots. There was a scuffle prior to the shots. And then they made all of us hunker down in the room. It's a little scary. It's it's definitely scary. And police tell us this entire incident was captured on body worn cameras. Three people were treated by hospital staff, but police have not released any details on what their injuries were. This is the first police involved shooting of the year and also the first of Mayor Mamdani's term in Park Slope. Patrick Robinson, News 12 Brooklyn.
