Two individuals were shot by federal Border Patrol agents in Portland during a targeted vehicle stop involving suspected Venezuelan gang members, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The victims, a man and his wife, were hospitalized after being found more than two miles from the scene, with the man shot twice in the arm and the woman shot in the chest.

Authorities report that the incident led to community protests and a call for calm, as many details remain unverified, including the identities of those shot and the circumstances that led to the use of force. Portland police were not involved until after the victims called 911, and officials are urging patience as the investigation continues.

Violence in our community is devastating. These are not statistics. These are human beings. Local officials in Portland held a news conference Thursday evening to address the community following a shooting involving federal Border Patrol agents. It looks like Kohler saying that he was shot twice by ice and his wife was shot as well. The Department of Homeland Security posted this message on X saying that US Border Patrol agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop involving suspected Venezuelan members of the Trendy Aragua gang. Agents say when they told the two people who they were, the driver tried to run them over with his car, leading the agent who feared for his life and safety to fire a defensive shot. According to DHS, the two then fled the scene. The victims called 911 and were found more than two miles from where the incident happened and were taken to the hospital. They've a male who was shot twice in the arm and his wife who was shot in the chest. Police say they still feel a lot of questions surrounding the incident. They're asking the community to remain calm after many residents took to the streets overnight in protest. The uncertainty and the fear and the sadness within our community is real. I recognize that our members recognize that and we are doing everything in our power to maintain that level of peace and calm and safety. Now we've learned that Portland police were not involved until that 911 call came in. It is worth noting that those claims by DHS we've not been able to verify whether the two people shot were in fact members of a Venezuelan gang or whether the driver did try to hit any of the agents.
