Some people have lost everything. I mean nothing's left and I ran away yesterday with nothing, nothing. My husband's away so all his clothes are here, everything we have is here, it's gone. Looking at it this morning, it's devastating. Authorities have declared a state of disaster. In the air and on land, thousands of firefighters are trying to contain the bushfires. But there's limits to what they can do. More than 300,000 hectares of land have been burned. We are seeing these fires continue to be widespread and fast moving. They also have the potential to be devastating. So we'll continue to act without delay to protect lives. The fires were sparked by an intense heatwave in southern Australia with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. It's the worst fire season since what's known as the Black Summer of 2019, which killed 33 people. For now, temperatures remain high in many areas.
