Iran is experiencing a second consecutive day of internet blackout as protests against the government intensify. Reports from government sources and hospitals suggest mass arrests and a surge in violent injuries, though independent verification is difficult due to the information blackout. The Revolutionary Guard has accused protesters of targeting military sites and has warned against any actions undermining national security.

International leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, have condemned the Iranian government's response, citing violence and arbitrary arrests. The exiled crown prince, Reza Pahlavi, has called for continued protests and a nationwide strike, while the United States has threatened action if force is used against demonstrators. Iranian authorities, meanwhile, accuse protesters of acting on behalf of foreign powers, though there is no evidence to support this claim.

And the crackdown on these demonstrations does appear to be intensifying, although it is difficult to glean exactly what's going on because of that information blackout you spoke of. Some of the information we're getting comes from government sources, a news agency close to Iran's Revolutionary Guard saying today that 100 people had been arrested just outside of Tehran. They described them as armed rioters. There have also been trickles of information from hospitals, where there are reports that medical staff are overwhelmed by the number of patients being brought in with violent injuries. But it is, as I say, difficult to verify this information. We have heard from the Revolutionary Guard today accusing what it called terrorists of targeting military sites. It said that it was a red line for any undermining of security or any undoing of the aims of the Islamic Revolution. But it does appear that there has been a heavier hand used by the authorities in this response. And there's been condemnation of that from a number of world leaders, including Prime Minister Mark Carney. He said the reports of violence, arbitrary arrests and intimidation tactics by the Iranian regime against its own people are profoundly concerning. Canada strongly condemns the killing of protesters and urges Iran to allow for freedom of expression and peaceful assembly without fear of reprisal. We've also been hearing again today from the son of the late Shah, who was ousted in that revolution in 1979, the crown prince who lives in exile in the United States, Reza Pahlavi. He's been calling for these protests to continue. He's called for a nationwide strike to take place as of today. And he says that protesters need to start preparing to take control of cities. He says he'll be in Iran when what he calls victory is achieved. It isn't clear that the protesters want any kind of return to the monarchy, but those that are risking their lives to take to the streets are certainly calling for change. And Julia, we know that the United States has threatened to attack Iran if security forces respond with force. What more do we know about that? That's a threat that President Donald Trump has made several times now, most recently yesterday when he said if they kill people, we'll hit them where it hurts. But he insisted that that didn't mean American boots on the ground. There have been shows of support from the Trump administration, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying overnight in a tweet on social media the United States supports the brave people of Iran. But inside Iran, among the authorities, that's being interpreted as intervention from the U.S. In fact, the Ayatollah speaking yesterday accused the protesters of doing Washington's bidding. There's no suggestion that these protests grew anything other than organically. And certainly the authorities, having seen what happened in Venezuela last weekend when the U.S. exfiltrated the president from his own capital city, they'll be watching that and certainly thinking they need to tread carefully going forward.
