Outside the Heaton Park Synagogue in North Manchester, forensic investigators remain hard at work piecing together the events of Thursday morning. Their task, made more complicated by the police bullet now known to have struck one of the two victims fired in the heat of the attack. A fast-moving investigation has seen arrests made in raids on two local properties, two men in their thirties and a 60-year-old woman suspected of the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism. The attacker himself, shot dead by police at the scene, was identified as Jihad al-Shami, a 35-year-old naturalised British citizen of Syrian heritage who was not previously known to counter-terrorism police. His father posted a statement on social media expressing shock and sorrow and distancing the family from what he called a heinous act. And that act is reverberating widely now, not just in a Jewish community reeling with shock and grief, but engulfing national politics as well. The Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy booed and heckled as he addressed a memorial vigil near the scene. With shouts of shame on you, he was told to stop pro-Palestine marches from taking place, blamed by many here for a rise in anti-Semitism. Other Jewish voices, though, say anti-Semitism is fuelled by Israel's war on Gaza. What Israel is doing is not Jewish. It's anti-Jewish. And we have warned time and again that these activities will bring a rise of anti-Semitic hatred. Now, you can understand that people, probably billions around the world, are now opposed to what Israel is doing. And we are asking time and again for Jewish communities to stand with the Palestinians against genocide. The politicians who've come here, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmoud and the Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, have joined police chiefs from London and Manchester in calling for a planned London march this Saturday, supporting the banned group Palestine Action, to be cancelled. Organisers say it'll go ahead, though. To do otherwise, they say, would be giving in to terror. And that will only intensify feelings here, already turning from grief to anger.
