A major police operation has ended in Panania in Sydney's south-west. The public had been warned to stay away after four men, one believed to be armed with a gun, stormed into a home and assaulted a person inside.

A significant police operation was conducted in Panania, NSW, following a home invasion involving four men who arrived in a dark-coloured sedan. The suspects, dressed in dark clothing and with their faces covered, forced entry into a residence on Tylegham Avenue, assaulted a 24-year-old male occupant, and stole cash before fleeing the scene.

Police, including tactical teams and helicopters, responded swiftly, locking down the area and clearing the premises. No offenders remained at the scene when police entered, and a crime scene was established. Authorities believe the incident was a targeted robbery and are appealing for dash cam or CCTV footage from the public to assist in identifying the suspects.

A frightening scene for Panaenia residents this morning. Make your way to the front door with nothing in your hands and follow the police instructions. Choppers flying overhead, snipers on roofs and police sending streets into lockdown. It's pretty scary because you know everyone around here and you don't expect that to happen. Four men pulled up to a home on Tylegham Avenue in a dark coloured sedan around 7am. All wearing dark clothing with their faces covered and one possibly being armed with a firearm. Exited that vehicle and approached the house. They then kicked the door in, punched a 24-year-old male occupant and stole cash before fleeing. A helicopter, bearcat and tactical team descended on the home with officers fearing an offender remained inside. Saw the choppers flying around, I saw the armoured truck pulling up. A childcare centre two doors down locked all kids inside while police scattered in backyards of surrounding houses. After some time it was ascertained that that premises was no longer occupied by any offenders or anyone else. That premises then was cleared and a crime scene was established. Around midday residents returned home and when asked why they were targeted, was the response. Police say the residents are known to them and are assisting with enquiries. As the dark coloured sedan is the only lead for police to go off in finding these men, they are asking anyone with dash cam footage of the car or CCTV of the four men to get in contact with them immediately. Officers also sending out a message to those shaken in the neighbourhood. I want to reassure the community that although this investigation is quite young, we are very confident at this stage that this was a targeted robbery. But who is behind it is still a mystery.
