The delay follows a lack of quorum in PNG's cabinet and comes after Vanuatu paused a major deal with Australia. Albanese also announced Australia will help build a new ministerial wing in PNG's parliament, though final costs are yet to be determined.

But tonight, fears a defence treaty between the two nations is in limbo. Well the PNG cabinet of course, yes they were due to meet, they didn't have quorum. The Puck Puck Treaty, which means crocodile in pigeon, it would see Australia legally come to the aid of PNG if they were to come under attack. It's not necessarily about getting rid of China, but I think it's about keeping them at bay. The deal is meant to be signed tomorrow. The delay comes a week after Vanuatu pressed pause on a half a billion dollar deal of its own with Australia, but the Prime Minister is confident we won't see a repeat of that. Anthony Albanese didn't come to Papua New Guinea empty handed, Australia will help build a new ministerial wing in PNG's own parliament, a soft tactic touch straight from China's own playbook, which has invested billions of dollars in infrastructure projects across the island nation. But how much will our gift to PNG cost Australian taxpayers? Well it's not a blank cheque, we have a good idea of the cost, but we're not going to give it a definitive idea until we've done the detailed design work.
