The complexities of delivering aid have been exacerbated since February due to telecom shutdowns, further complicating the efforts of aid agencies and concealing the extent of human rights abuses, particularly in Darfur. There, paramilitary forces, emerging from the notorious Janjaweed, are accused of committing genocidal crimes similar to those witnessed two decades ago.

Observers have pointed to external influences exacerbating the conflict, with countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Iran accused of providing military support to the warring factions. This international backing enables the continued strife, highlighting the significant role of foreign intervention in prolonging the war. According to analysts, the global community's neglect of Sudan's crisis poses a grave risk, suggesting that without a concerted effort to end the violence, the country could face further fragmentation, threatening stability in a region connected by seven international borders and located at the intersection of four major regions.

The focus of global attention on other international crises, such as those in the Middle East and Ukraine, has led to the marginalization of Sudan’s plight, raising concerns over the potential for another tragic ethnic conflict if the international community fails to act.

Critics accuse regional backers of the warring parties like the United Arab Emirates and Iran of providing arms. Both of them have enough backing from outside to continue the conflict, right, and this is part of the issue. It's like, it's not just who can get them to the table, but it's who can turn the faucets off. Analysts say the international community ignores Sudan at its peril. Without greater effort to stop the war, it will fragment further. This country that has seven borders, that really is at the confluence of four different regions. But with the world's attention focused on the Middle East and Ukraine, Sudan's suffering and the potential for another ethnic slaughter is barely surfacing. Margaret Evans, CBC News, London.
