Dr. Mohamed Abushakil emphasized the critical implications of this blockade for hospitals and patients in the area. Despite international criticism and warnings of the humanitarian consequences, there's no clear indication of when Israel might allow humanitarian aid to resume.

Israel's decision appears to be a strategic maneuver aimed at exerting pressure on Hamas, rather than signaling the start of a broader ground offensive. Defense Minister Yoav Galant hinted at the possibility of compromise for the return of Israeli hostages, suggesting that Israel's objectives might allow for negotiation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, faces pressure from both the international community and domestic political allies to continue military operations against Hamas fighters, a stance believed necessary for the hostages' release.

The situation has sparked debate within Israel, with increasing voices, particularly among the hostages' families, calling for an end to the conflict if it could ensure the safe return of the hostages. Even the best friends of Israel are clear an assault on Rafah would be a strategic mistake a political calamity and a humanitarian nightmare. But Israel's seizing control of the border crossing Tuesday may be aimed at putting more pressure on Hamas and not necessarily the beginning of a long threatened ground offensive. Defense Minister Yoav Galant suggested there is room to compromise if it means bringing back the hostages. Squeezed by international pressure on one side and his right-wing coalition partners on the other Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said eliminating Hamas's remaining fighters is essential to freeing the Israeli hostages. But increasingly many Israelis and especially the families of hostages don't believe those aims are compatible. If the only way to get the hostages back is by providing an Israeli guarantee to end this war then end this war. Hamas meanwhile has threatened to walk away from the continuing ceasefire talks in Cairo if Israel's attacks on Rafah continue.
