Israel's military has carried out airstrikes in Rafah, residents said, hours after Israel told Palestinians to evacuate parts of the southern Gaza city where more than a million people uprooted by the war have been sheltering.

According to Hamas-affiliated Al-Aqsa TV, the Israeli forces targeted regions in eastern Rafah adjacent to neighborhoods that were ordered to evacuate. This action came on the heels of a previous attack during which Israeli aircraft targeted ten residential buildings in Rafah, resulting in at least 20 fatalities and injuring several others, as stated by medical authorities. The Israeli military declared that this response was aimed at the site of a mortar launch that killed four Israeli soldiers and that their operations in eastern Rafah were targeted responses to that mortar attack.

In the wake of these events, Palestinian families have started moving towards what has been described by the Israeli military as an "expanded humanitarian zone," located approximately 12 miles away. The relocation efforts were communicated through various means including text messages in Arabic, phone calls, and leaflets. A displaced Palestinian named Abu Ahmed expressed the dilemma faced by residents, stating that after being directed initially to Rafah as a safe haven, they are now being told to evacuate. He raised concerns about the possible destinations for the large number of civilians affected by these directives.

The Israeli military has clarified that its evacuation orders for Rafah were part of a "limited scope operation" but did not provide further specifics, including whether this might precede further offensives. A senior Hamas official has interpreted these evacuation orders as a sign of a dangerous escalation, potentially leading to severe consequences. There is growing apprehension regarding a comprehensive assault on Rafah, which Israel has previously hinted at as a strategy to target Hamas fighters and rescue hostages.

The conflict underpinning these events commenced following a cross-border raid by Hamas on October 7, resulting in 1,200 fatalities and the capture of 252 individuals, as reported by Israeli counts. Since the onset of Israel's military actions, over 34,000 Palestinians have been killed and 78,000 wounded, according to figures from Gaza's health ministry.

Israel's military said it had urged residents of Rafah to evacuate in a limited scope operation. It gave no specific reasons, nor did it say if offensive action might follow. A senior Hamas official said the evacuation order was a dangerous escalation that would have consequences. Fears grow of a full-blown assault in Rafah that has been long threatened by Israel against holdouts it says harbour thousands of Hamas fighters and potentially dozens of hostages. The war began after Hamas' cross-border raid on October 7th, in which 1,200 people were killed and 252 hostages taken, according to Israeli tallies. Since then, Israel's assault has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians and wounded 78,000, according to Gaza's health ministry.

A prominent member of Israel's war cabinet, Benny Gantz, has threatened to quit if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doesn't outline a post-war plan for Gaza by early next month. There's also pressure from protesters who are calling on the government to do more to secure the release of captives.
