The Pickett Fire in Napa County, California, has burned nearly 7,000 acres, leading to widespread evacuations in the region. Fire crews, numbering around 2,000, are working to contain the blaze, which is currently burning in rugged terrain and has largely spared the area's wineries and vineyards.

Unlike the 2020 Glass Fire, which caused significant damage to vineyards and wineries, the Pickett Fire has not yet resulted in major losses to the wine industry. Cooler weather conditions are expected to assist firefighters in their containment efforts, providing some relief after rapid fire growth due to recent heat.

All right, at this point, we pivot to bring you the latest on a wildfire burning through California's wine country. Fire crews are fighting to contain what they're calling the Pickett Fire. It's burned nearly 7,000 acres and prompted widespread evacuations. CBS News correspondent Carter Evans is in Calistoga in Napa Valley and joins us now with more on this. Good morning, Carter. You know, viewers will be familiar with the wineries and the vineyards in this area, but what is the scale of the blaze and the threat to life out there? Okay, so the good news is that the wineries and vineyards have not been impacted in a big way yet. We understand that one might've been affected, but mostly this fire is burning off in rugged area right now. Last, the last fire that came through here in 2020, it was called the Glass Fire. That one did significantly damage vineyards. It burned entire vineyards down. And not just that, it also burned down wineries and wine cellars as well, some with very old and expensive wines in it. So fortunately this time we haven't had that problem. It's interesting to see the first responders behind you carrying cases of water. This morning you told me about the machinery that they're able to literally orchestrate, in your words, in order to contain the blaze. But what are some of the big challenges, especially considering, as you mentioned, a massive blaze has moved here, moved through this part of the country before? Yeah, I think one of the biggest challenges just coordinating this firefight is when you've got 2000 firefighters on the ground. I mean, look at this encampment behind me. This sprouted up overnight and they've got a shift change coming in right now. So we've got a bunch of firefighters that have been out there all night coming back in, fresh firefighters heading out on the fire right now. The good news is the weather is starting to cool down just a little bit. The heat has been a big challenge and that's what caused this fire to grow so much over the weekend. But today it's cooling down a little bit. You see I'm wearing a jacket right now and we expect the weather to continue to cool down throughout the week and that's gonna really help out firefighters quite a bit.
