The Atlantic hurricane season is now in its most active phase, historically marked by a significant rise in the number of hurricanes and named storms. Data from 1944 to 2020 shows that the period from mid-August through September consistently sees the highest storm activity.

This increase is attributed to peak ocean temperatures and a reduction in Saharan dust, which together create favorable conditions for storm development across the Atlantic Basin. While early and late season storms are possible, the majority occur during this central period, particularly in September.

Peak hurricane season starts in Atlantic

the storm. All right, by the time we get in the mid August, late August and September, that is the heart of the hurricane season. So on our curve, which shows you the number of storms per day from 1944 to 2020, we're right in here on our steep incline up historically for hurricanes and named storms. That's why I call this the heart of the hurricane season here. And when you look at the graph, there's kind of four seasons that you see during the hurricane season. You have early season development. You get that June through mid July. And then we just got out of what what I call the mid season low. That is from mid July to mid August. And the red highlighted here, boy, that is the heart of the season where you see most of the storms. And still you can get some storms in late season. That's October through November, although most of the storms occur in that period in October here. All right. Here's what we look at for storms. Still you can get some homegrown development sometimes in August, especially early in the month. But later in the month, you start getting development out in the tropical Atlantic where we've seen Aaron and we're tracking a couple of tropical waves. Once you get in the September, the entire Atlantic Basin is open for business. You have those hot spots near the islands, southwest Atlantic and, of course, in the Caribbean and in the Gulf. The reason September is such a busy month, a couple of things here. Water temperatures are usually at their peak almost every year. They they peak in in September. And also, while you're dealing with a lot of dry air during the early parts of the year, by the time you get into September, the Saharan dust is reduced. And that's why the Atlantic entire Atlantic Basin is open for business. Stay with us.
