With the race approaching, forecasts indicate mild and light wind conditions, a significant change from last year's challenging weather that resulted in two fatalities and numerous retirements. The lighter winds are expected to make the race more strategic, reducing the likelihood of record-breaking times and benefiting a wider range of boat types.

It's still the same silver rocket that we're all used to, it's still the same boat just with a new name and a few extra flashy pieces. Palm Beach Motor Group undertaking a comprehensive six-month rebuild including the addition of new seafoils, though the decorated crew remains. I'm actually the new kid on the block, but basically the whole crew is the standard crew from previous years. Just eight sleeps till race day and the long-range forecast is looking kind, a stark contrast from last year's tumultuous conditions that saw two men killed and 22 boats retire. When they start, we're looking at winds being coming from the east or the southeast, being around that 10 to 20 kilometre per hour range, which is pretty slow. A huge sense of relief for returning sailors with all-round light conditions forecast, including in Bass Strait, though with minimal winds the chances of a super maxi breaking a race record are looking pretty slim. The big boats could be bobbing around in Bass Strait waiting for the next thing to happen. Forecasts like this where it's a bit more of a chess match than a drag race, having two navigators helps a lot. It'll be nice for many different sizes and types of boats.
