The declaration, made by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) and its Famine Review Committee, is based on established metrics, including the child's mid-upper arm circumference, which has been in use since 2019 for conflict zones and hard-to-reach areas.

The announcement has been met with political controversy, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejecting the declaration and some conservative media questioning the IPC's methodology. UN agencies, however, have reiterated the severity of the crisis and called on the Israeli government to acknowledge the situation.

The UN-backed global hunger watchdog, the Integrated Food Security Phase classification, known as the IPC, and its Famine Review Committee are made up of independent experts. They do not comment publicly on politics, but they have become the target of political attacks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Friday's declaration of famine an outright lie. And conservative media outlets like the Washington Free Beacon have alleged the IPC quietly changed one of its key reporting metrics to make the classification easier. The metric in question is known as the child's mid-upper arm circumference. It delivers a weight-to-height score. According to IPC publications, it has been accepted since 2019 and is used in armed conflict and difficult-to-reach areas, because it only requires a tape measure. To declare famine using this technique, the threshold for the proportion of children who must be severely malnourished is 15 per cent. On Saturday, the head of the UN's Agency for Palestinian Refugees said it's time for the Government of Israel to stop denying the famine it has created in Gaza, echoing an earlier statement from the UN's relief chief that urged people to be in no doubt that it is a famine.
