Pakistan and India are currently experiencing heightened tensions following a deadly militant attack that claimed the lives of 26 tourists in the disputed Kashmir region. The attack, marking the deadliest assault on civilians in the area in two decades, has led to a significant security crackdown in Indian-controlled Kashmir, with hundreds being arrested and residents warned to stay away from militant groups. Both countries claim the entire Kashmir region but each controls only parts of it. India accuses Pakistan of being linked to the attack, a charge that Islamabad denies.

In response to the attack, India has taken several decisive actions. A key border crossing between the two countries has been shut, and the airspace above has been closed. Furthermore, India has suspended a vital river waters sharing treaty that Pakistan relies on, a move which Pakistani officials have warned could be perceived as an act of war if it continues. This situation has sparked panic and protests over what some are calling "water terrorism" and has intensified India's response, driven by anger and a desire for retaliation.

The international community has expressed concern over the escalating situation. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged both nations to remain calm and work towards de-escalation. As tensions run high, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, faces the challenge of uniting the country and responding to public anger with a measured and proportionate approach.

The deadliest militant attack on civilians in two decades triggered a security crackdown in Indian-controlled Kashmir with hundreds arrested. And police warnings for residents to stay away from militant groups. The violence has sent two nuclear powers hurtling towards the brink of war. Sworn enemies India and Pakistan both claim Kashmir in its entirety but only control parts of it. India's government blames Pakistan for having what New Delhi calls linkages to the attack, a charge Islamabad denies. This key border crossing between the two countries is now shut. The airspace above closed. And India has suspended a crucial river waters sharing treaty that Pakistan downstream relies on. A move Pakistani officials are not taking lightly as they warn India is preparing for military action very soon. Any attempt to stop or divert the flow of water belonging to Pakistan as per the Indus water treaty will be considered as an act of war. There's no effect yet from putting the treaty on hold. But panic and protests saying no to water terrorism are growing. There's also seething anger and a desire for vengeance propelling India's response, experts say. So the challenge for Prime Minister Modi is to calm public anger. He has to keep the country united. At the same time he has to deliver a response that's proportionate and calibrated. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has spoken to both sides urging calm and de-escalation as fears of more violence grow in Kashmir among a people yearning for peace and stability.
