Pennsylvania State lawmakers are working on legislation to protect themselves from political violence amid recent deadly and dangerous incidents targeting political figures and activists.

In response to a rise in political violence, Pennsylvania lawmakers are advancing a package of bills designed to enhance the safety of elected officials. Democratic State Representative Greg Scott is leading efforts to introduce measures that would exempt legislators' home addresses from public records and require members of the General Assembly to designate temporary replacements in the event of death while in office. 

The push for these protections follows several high-profile incidents, including the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the assassination of Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman, an arson attack on the governor's mansion, and an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Lawmakers from both parties have emphasized the need to reject political violence and ensure public service remains accessible and safe.

As the increase in political violence has so many wondering, where do we go from here as a nation? And Greg, you spoke to a state representative behind new legislation to protect lawmakers from this growing violence. Yeah, no, Jason, you're exactly right. I mean, it is a package of bills and, you know, despite what had occurred in regards to Charlie Kirk, whatever side that folks stand on, political leaders are saying that this is something that this political violence has to come to an end. Political violence anywhere is unacceptable, and everybody should be condemning it, whether you're on the right, the left, whether you're an independent purple, green, blue, red. A stance that Democratic Pennsylvania State Representative Greg Scott of the 54th District says is important now more than ever to highlight as the country moves on after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was killed Wednesday during an event in Utah. This is a moment whether or not you agree with Charlie Kirk or not, whether or not we're going to allow people to kill people because they disagree with them. Representative Scott says political violence has been on the rise in the country. Back in June, Minnesota Democratic Representative Melissa Hortman was assassinated in her home alongside her husband here in Pennsylvania. Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro's mansion in Harrisburg was set on fire in April. And last July, there was an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump during a rally in Butler just outside of Pittsburgh, a political climate that is concerning for Representative Scott and the reason he is introducing a package of bills to better protect lawmakers, including a bill that exempts home addresses of state legislators from public access under the right to no law. And a bill that would amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to require each member of the General Assembly to name three people to serve as their temporary replacement if they were to die while in office. These are type of experiences that we've come to know and the public to happen in Washington, D.C. and to national political figures. But now our local representatives, their lives are being threatened. Their husbands, their families are being threatened in this environment. Something the representative says he experiences on the regular, including this voice message from an upset constituent. All of your days are numbered. All of you are Democrats. Which these types of threats and the increased political violence is something Representative Scott says is taking a toll on legislators on both sides of the aisle. It's not only just fewer public events and legislators being less accessible to the public, but the biggest the biggest consequence of this is going to be good people not wanting to get involved in politics. Good people not wanting to get involved in public service because they're going to say, what is it worth? Now, Pennsylvania Republican State Representative Jason or TTI posted a message to state legislators saying, in part, we must stop hating one another over politics. We must stop seeing the other side is evil, unworthy or expendable, because when we do, we risk losing the very foundation of what we are, a Democratic Republic, where debate is the mechanism by which truth and justice move forward. I know there will be people who disagree with this statement or try to find fault in it. Some will say Charlie Kirk was controversial or that they didn't like what he stood for. But those reactions missed the point. This is not about agreeing with everything he said or did. It's about rejecting political violence in all forms, no matter who the target is. If we only defend free speech for people we agree with, we do not defend free speech at all.
