After some 49 dog years, K9 West is retiring with a special party celebrating his legacy. West was the Ottawa Police Service's first trauma support dog and during his career, he offered comfort to survivors and victims, and gave strength to his police peers. He also helped raise more than $50,000 for the non-profit National Service Dogs.

West, a therapy dog with the Ottawa Police Service, has retired following seven years of dedicated service. Renowned for his calm demeanor and ability to provide emotional support, West played a significant role in assisting victims, officers, and the community, including supporting survivors of the Westboro bus crash.

West joined the force in 2018 and was formally sworn in alongside other officers. Over the years, he participated in community events, forensic interviews, and hospital visits. West's handler has adopted him, marking a special transition from working partners to family.

OK9 West has to be the calmest, most gentle dog that I've ever encountered. He's absolutely exceptional in his ability to instinctively know when someone needs support and go to them and provide that support in the subtle ways like a soft gaze, a nudge with his nose, a paw, helping paw when needed. So he's just a trained dog to really sense people's emotional needs. They're all very special, but there's one moment in particular after the Westboro bus crash, which was a tragic event for Ottawa, and West was assigned to work with a young woman named Elizabeth Lanigan. And this woman was really impacted, like all the people on the bus that day and witnesses and families to what happened. And so West actually worked with her to help her gain the confidence to be able to get back on the bus and resume some independence again. So he joined us October 15, 2018, and then a few days later was formally sworn in with other police officers, got his badge two or three days later. He didn't get off to the best start with us. For those of you that were there, you might recall as everyone was taking their oath, the members at attention, West fell asleep, started snoring. So Tracy has performance managed him and brought his performance up, and that's long past us. West offered survivors reassurance and gave our members strength, and his impact extends far beyond the service. And his work, as was mentioned, leaves a lasting legacy. But look, seven years, it's West, I'm talking to you West, look at me, West, it's time to take a break, enjoy your retirement and the treats, she's looking up at the treats. But can we give West a hand please? And Tracy. Yeah. You know, at first it was very emotional, I have to say, you know, I really looked forward to continuing working with West. But he's actually earned his retirement, he's put seven years of dedicated service into the Ottawa Police. And we've done as much as we can, you know, attending community events, supporting victims in forensic interviews, going to school visits, going to hospital visits when members' families are impacted. And I think right now, West is just ready to be a porch dog, and have some cozy naps and just relax and thinking about all the legacy he leaves behind for the two other dogs we have in service. I am lucky enough to adopt West, and I think that makes it really special today, knowing that I arrive here as his handler, but I leave as his dog mom.
