Optus has experienced another outage affecting around 5,000 customers in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, leaving them unable to make calls, including to emergency services. The outage, caused by a mobile tower failure, prevented nine people in Dapto from reaching triple zero, though all were later confirmed safe.

This incident follows a previous outage two weeks earlier that was linked to at least three deaths, further eroding public confidence in the telecommunications provider. The Australian Communications and Media Authority is investigating, and there are growing calls for an independent inquiry into the triple zero system. Optus has yet to provide a detailed explanation for the outage.

Optus under fire for second triple zero outage

A new week brings more of the same problems for Optus. Another triple zero outage, this time hitting New South Wales. This can't happen again. This is an absolutely shocking failure. Around 5,000 customers across the Illawarra region were unable to make calls, including to triple zero, between 3am and midday yesterday, with nine callers in Dapdo who called the emergency line, unable to get through. I refused to work. No one could ring me and I couldn't ring anyone else. Do you feel like you can rely on Optus if you are in an emergency? No. Not at all, sadly. Of those affected, one used a non-Optus phone to reach an ambulance. The others have been checked on by police and everyone is OK. But after an outage two weeks ago resulted in at least three deaths, this latest incident has rocked what confidence was left in the Telco's reliability. I do think it's up to Optus now to explain what happened and more importantly what are they going to do to fix it. And I do think that Optus is going to need to step up and explain why the community can have confidence that the network is going to work when people need it. While Optus has confirmed this outage was a result of a mobile tower failure, it's yet to explain how that happened and why it happened here in the Illawarra, only adding to the long list of issues currently under investigation. The government-backed Australian Communications and Media Authority is also leading its own inquiry, but this latest outage has sparked calls for further action. And we are calling for an independent inquiry into the whole triple zero ecosystem. The government insists it's not letting Optus off the hook and neither are its customers.
