The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce is developing a model policy, which schools must either adopt or use as a framework for their own policies by mid-2026.

The move follows growing integration of AI in classrooms, with many teachers already using such tools, though some remain opposed. Private schools like Lake Ridge Academy have already implemented AI use policies, focusing on academic integrity and teacher training to recognize AI-generated work. The initiative is seen as a step to help education evolve alongside technological advancements.

The use of artificial intelligence in our everyday lives is growing, and Tiffany, you have reported on ways that AI is being introduced and incorporated in the classroom. And last year, I went to a school in Mansfield that's using ChatGPT and virtual reality to enhance students' learning experiences. This is a tool that we have to realize that education's evolving, and we have to evolve with it. And that includes some challenges that all educators in Ohio will need to address. Ohio public school districts will soon be required to implement artificial intelligence use guidelines. I spoke with state Senator Andrew Brenner, chair of the Ohio Senate Education Committee, about the mandate that was included in the state's most recent budget. Why did you feel that was important? Well, because AI is everywhere now, and students are very smart, and they will be able to take advantage. The law doesn't require schools to implement AI instruction, but schools will need rules on how AI can be used responsibly. It is important that we have the policies in place to make sure that they're ethically used by students, as well as, you know, making sure that teachers have the tools that they need to be able to recognize AI. Lake Ridge Academy in North Ridgeville is a private school, but it adopted an AI use policy two years ago. Donny Batala, director of the upper school, spearheaded the initiative. It's all about preparing students for the future. Batala tells me the policy addresses a big concern, using AI to cheat. Students have to take ownership for their work. AI is not a replacement for the expectations that we have put onto the students. Another part of the policy is training. Teachers are learning to spot AI-generated work by knowing their students' writing styles. We've got an English teacher who's showing them that AI doesn't necessarily create the paragraph that you want them to create. It doesn't have a human voice to it. Nearly two-thirds of teachers in the U.S. utilized artificial intelligence this past school year, according to a recent Gallup survey. But almost 30 percent of teachers oppose AI tools in the classroom. Is this something that people should be afraid of? No. AI has its place, and there's a future for it. Is AI bettering education? For the time being, yes. I think it's pushing us to evolve and to do more and to be better. Well, the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce has until the end of this year to come up with an AI use policy. Then, K-12 public schools will have until July 2026 to adopt that policy or create their own that aligns with the state's model. You know, some teachers are jumping in, doing it right away. Others really haven't gotten on board with this yet. But I can only imagine where AI will be maybe even five years from now. Yeah, those teachers that haven't jumped in feet first yet likely will realize they probably have to because it's coming fast and furious. You got to get on board or else you'll fall behind. I think that's with all of us when it comes to this AI. Yeah, agreed. All right, Tiffany, thank you.
