Let's welcome in NYPD Chief of Department John Schell. Good morning, Chief. Look, I spent a lot of time working in city government back in the day, and almost every police officer told me, we know who the bad guys are in our neighborhoods and on our streets, and if we're allowed to, we'll go get them off the streets and make our streets safer. Is this what we're talking about here? Right, this, we do know who most of the bad guys are, and the problem you spoke about for years now is repeat offenders and consequences for those people. In terms of this brutal murder in Queens last Monday, this person just got out of jail for doing 16 years for robbery and sexual assault, and was also on parole last Monday. So, you know, we know who they are, we know how to apprehend them, we just need to keep them in jail. And we're talking about a small minority. We're not talking about everybody here. We all know the repeat offenders that affect crime in New York City and nationwide. How frustrating is it for cops when you go and you arrest the bad guy, essentially, and then you see them out on the street a few days later? It's terribly frustrating because when we talk about repeat offenders and the crimes they commit, we often talk numbers, but these are people, these are victims, these are our families. So when the cops do a good job in making a good arrest for a really bad person, yeah, they don't wanna see them on the street the next day because they figure, what's the point here? But we're professionals and we'll keep doing it until someone fixes the issue. Yeah, good point. Yeah, Chief, it reminds me of what we heard from FBI Director Kash Patel on Friday when they announced that they had got the assassin of Charlie Kirk. It's like, this is what happens when you let cops be cops. And I mean, that's really what we're talking about here right now. It's let the police do their jobs and our communities will be safer. Yeah. Yeah, no doubt about it. Enforcement as it relates to arrests in New York City are at all-time highs, 30 plus years. And we look at the case you just referenced, the old school detective work, whether it be the case we're talking about, unfortunately, Charlie Kirk, when you get video, that video leads to probative evidence, that leads to leads. You look at Mangeone, now Charlie Kirk, unfortunately, the case we're talking about. Video is so important because once we have you on video, it's just a moment of time with the old school detectives and the technology we have to make these apprehensions. Yeah, it's clear police are doing their job to the best of their ability, arresting these criminals a dozen or so times, however many times it takes, as you mentioned. The problem, it seems, lies with the laws and maybe lenient judges or lawmakers and city officials making it so that these repeat offenders, they can get out easier. There's cashless bail in some places. And now we have to worry about New York City's mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, who once pledged to defund the police. He has said in public he wants less police. What would that do to this city? Oh, our staffing is already down tremendously and we gotta fund our police officers. We have to pay them. We have to make sure the quality of life in their precincts are proper. We cannot go backwards. We really can't. We've worked so hard post-2020 to get to a little light, if you will, to turn this thing around. To go backwards is not an option. And if you don't fund us, people aren't gonna join the police department. If you don't give them a good contract, people are not gonna join and we're gonna have issues. At the end of the day, the cops in New York City, like everywhere else, took an oath. We will do our job the best of our ability. We just need the tools to do it to keep the city safe. Great point, great message. Yeah, and real quick, before we go, Chief, I'd like to get your thoughts. Obviously, we heard the president announced he's going to deploy the National Guard to the city of Memphis to help fight crime. Now, we know he's talked about New York City, Chicago, and other places in the past. I mean, if that offer came through, do you think additional federal resources in New York City would help make the city safer? Well, look, we're the largest police department in the world, 34,000 strong. We know what we're doing, we do a good job, and we're heading in the right direction. So I would say, you know, we appreciate the offer, but New York City, NYPD's got this right now. All right, good stuff. John Schell, thank you, Chief. I appreciate you this morning.
