Prolonged protests and pressure has paid off for both nurses and midwives who've accepted an offer for better pay and conditions. However their fight with the NSW state government is far from over.

The deal also introduces improved roster conditions, such as guaranteeing two consecutive days off. However, union representatives emphasize that the agreement does not fully address their broader pay claims, as they continue to seek a 35% pay rise over three years through the Industrial Relations Commission.

The interim agreement was accepted due to the lengthy timeline expected for a final determination. Meanwhile, the government is implementing measures to alleviate pressure on healthcare workers, including expanding the role of community pharmacists to treat common conditions and potentially prescribe antiviral medication for the flu. These reforms aim to reduce unnecessary hospital visits and improve overall workload management for healthcare staff.

From the picket line to signing on the dotted line, a pay deal, at least an interim one, has been struck. I'm not going to pretend it's been easy. It hasn't. It's been a challenging two and a half years. Nurses and midwives will see a 3.5% pay bump, including super, backdated to July, plus a 5% boost to night shift penalties. The deal also guarantees two consecutive days off, among other roster improvements. Never have workers and nurses and midwives seen this size increase into their overnight shift penalty rates. It in no way addresses the overall claim that we have against the government for a pay rise that values our members' work. Later this month, the union will make the case for a 35% increase over three years in the state's Industrial Relations Commission. A determination likely won't be made until early next year, hence the pragmatic call to take the interim deal. We're seeing nurses and midwives move to Queensland and Victoria, ACT and elsewhere for higher pay and better workloads. Workloads that are even more strained because of the barriers to seeing a GP. But there's a plan for that too. The government's banking on community pharmacies like this one to take on more of the load, treating common conditions, so that patients don't wind up in our emergency departments unnecessarily. After a successful trial, pharmacists can now permanently treat skin conditions, including school sores, shingles and mild eczema.
