It could be another month before crews get control of a wildfire burning in Nova Scotia's Annapolis County, an official with the province's Natural Resources Department says. The Long Lake fire has destroyed homes and forced more than 1,000 residents from the area.

A wildfire in Nova Scotia's Annapolis County has grown to approximately 8,200 hectares, making it the largest in the province this season. Volatile and dangerous conditions have prevented officials from fully assessing the extent of the destruction, though between 300 and 500 homes have been evacuated and some have been damaged or destroyed.

Fire crews have been battling the blaze for over two weeks, with additional support arriving from Ontario to relieve local teams. Officials estimate that the fire could continue burning for at least another month, as dry and hot weather, along with challenging terrain, complicate containment efforts.

Here in Canada, volatile conditions in Nova Scotia are preventing officials from getting a clearer picture of the destruction from the out-of-control fire in Annapolis County. The area still remains too dangerous for crews to get in and properly assess. The CBC's Brett Ruskin is tracking the fire and joins us live from Halifax with more. So, Brett, bring us up to speed here on the status of this fire. Yeah, Hillary, we just had an update a few minutes ago from Nova Scotia government. They say that the fire has grown in size by about 200 hectares, now measuring around 8,200 hectares in size. So, the largest this fire has been and the largest fire that we've seen here in the province of Nova Scotia so far this season. Now, we know that there have been 300 to 500 or so homes that have been evacuated and that some of those homes have been damaged or destroyed. That's according to officials that spoke earlier in the week. We're still waiting for exact details. We might get exact details later on today as to exactly how many homes have been destroyed and damaged by this fire. But it is difficult for crews to make that accurate assessment just because, as mentioned, the fire is so volatile still with that north side of the fire encountering kind of some difficult terrain, a lakeside area with kind of a rugged coastline along there. So, difficult conditions with, again, dry, hot conditions as well with the fire operations still underway. Now, speaking of the operations, we do know that there will be some reprieve for the firefighters and the management teams who have been working on this fire for upwards of two weeks now. There is a new crew coming in from Ontario with both firefighters to fight on the ground as well as an incident management team that will be taking over for the short term, at least, to give, again, a bit of a break to the local crews because officials are now saying this fire will likely need to be fought and will likely continue burning for at least another month from now. So, quite an operation, quite an intensive organization of the resources that they have on hand to continue fighting this fire in the long term going forward. Hillary.
