The New South Wales government is allocating $100 million to help 700 not-for-profit preschools expand their services, potentially allowing for longer hours, care for younger children, and extended operation during school holidays. The funding cannot be used for staff pay rises, which remain a federal issue, and staff shortages continue to challenge the sector.

In response to low flu vaccination rates among young children, the state will also introduce a $4 million program offering a free nasal spray flu vaccine for children aged 2 to under 5. This initiative, set to begin next year, aims to increase coverage by providing a needle-free alternative, initially available through general practitioners. The move follows similar actions in other states and is intended to reduce serious influenza cases among children.

It might mean longer hours, it might mean taking on younger children, it might mean opening for more weeks of the year. While the money can be used a number of ways, it cannot fund a pay rise. That's a federal issue. Staff shortages remain a challenge for all of us in early childhood. A different challenge the state believes it can address, though, is the low number of young children vaccinated against the flu. This year, more than 3,000 kids aged under 5 have ended up in emergency, 600 were ultimately admitted. The 24% of coverage for vaccination in New South Wales is simply not good enough. Suspecting needles could be part of the problem, the state will spend $4 million offering parents a free nasal spray vaccine for children aged 2 to under 5. To start next year, Queensland Today announced a similar program. That is really just a little simple squirt up each nostril. The spray has been available for more than 20 years in America, and since last month, parents can order it themselves. The vaccine nasal spray is now available for home delivery in 34 states. Initially, it will be GP-only here, though, as authorities track whether a needle-free alternative does make a difference.
