AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter warns of coastal flooding and beach erosion to impact the Northeast as a tropical wind and rainstorm is expected to sweep through the region.

A major storm system is affecting the northeast United States, bringing heavy rainfall and significant coastal flooding, particularly along the New Jersey coastline, Long Island, and southeastern New England. The storm, described as a hybrid with both typical East Coast and tropical characteristics, has drawn in tropical moisture and moved over warm Gulf Stream waters, intensifying its impact.

Although the system has not been officially named as a tropical storm or hurricane, meteorologists at AccuWeather have rated it a 1 on their RealImpact Scale for hurricanes, emphasizing its potential to cause damage and pose risks to people and property. Tidal flooding remains a concern, especially during periods of high tide, and residents in affected areas are advised to remain vigilant.

We saw that this was going to be a storm That was going to cause a lot of damage now earlier We were talking with Leslie Hudson from Virginia Beach her cameraman has lived there all his life And he said this is one of the worst storms He's seen he's seen in 10 to 15 years Because of the tidal flooding and that was why we're getting a lot of questions on this Why we call this a tropical rain and wind storm we want to focus though John We did not name this storm We didn't say it was a tropical storm But we were afraid that this was a storm that was going to have tropical moisture with it and cause problems Exactly. It was going to be a combination of a typical East Coast storm, but also have some tropical factors to it as well There was tropical moisture that was drawn into the storm It was as it was forming off the east coast of Florida and also it was moving over the warm Gulf Stream water So it was a hybrid howler with the major issue here as it relates to coastal flooding And that is what we've been emphasizing all along and that's going to continue to be the case today Don't let your guard down across the New Jersey coastline up across parts of Long Island and into southeastern New England still dealing with some coastal flooding in those areas here a Major storm along the East Coast and that's why when we take took a look at it from the Accuweather real impact scale again Not that we thought it was a tropical storm or certainly not a hurricane But because it would be able to do this we wanted to we were afraid that if people just said well It's a nor'easter. This is what matters to people and this is what risk lives and property and so as a result of that we rated this as A 1 on Accuweather's real impact scale for hurricanes on a storm that we highlighted All the way back to early last week may never get a name from the government Now this is what the rating showed no rating and then it's a one you could see the difference John That's correct, and it's important to point out some storms are named There was a subtropical storm out in the middle of the ocean last week that existed for about 24 hours That was named subtropical storm Karen right and of course that's a threat to some marine interests But not to a large number of people this storm was a major threat to many people on the East Coast That's why we highlighted that it could become a Subtropical storm and we rated it a 1 on Accuweather's real impact scale for hurricanes We do that to better protect people and keep them safer. That's what we do here at Accuweather John about 30 seconds here I want to show you this and this is the idea you had this is what this storm did with the King tides that dark Color that's the forecasted tides about 20 seconds Yeah Look at that and look at the difference between where the typical tide would be and what we're going to be dealing with today That's onshore flow look out for flooding along these coast of New Jersey and even the next two high tides later this morning in tomorrow Right the tidal flooding is still a concern through it tomorrow.
