Officials have issued multiple mandatory evacuation orders as the hurricane, which rapidly intensified to a Category 5 before weakening to Category 2, threatens the region with high winds, large waves, and flooding.

Emergency crews are reinforcing sand dunes and monitoring key roads, while ferry services are facilitating evacuations from vulnerable areas. Dangerous rip currents have led to multiple rescues along the coast, and authorities are urging people to stay out of the ocean. The hurricane's expanded wind field is expected to worsen conditions along the East Coast.

I would definitely expect you know some ocean side damage over here, but because we're back on the sound side, but if you live in this house by living as a house, I would probably hit the road. The powerful storm interrupting the height of the summer season along the Outer Banks, multiple mandatory evacuation orders. Or in effect, a major hurricane being offshore is probably more damaging to this area than a Category one that makes a direct hit. Well, you run from the water and that's what our problem is going to be. Is it? The waves are going to be huge. Deer County community manager Bobby out and told us how powerful winds miles offshore could push waves past sand dunes, flooding roads and destroying homes. If you're 24 hours out and you're not ready, then you haven't been doing your job. They got the heavy equipment underway 12. This is the main artery that runs through Deer County. They're huffing up the dunes here, hoping the water doesn't overwash and shut down this roadway. Right now it's a race against Todd. Evacuees waited for hours at Ocracoke Islands Ferry Dock yesterday. Other than by plane, the ferry is the only way out. Lifeguards rescuing 18 swimmers today at Wrightsville Beach in the southeastern part of the state. After Aaron spawned dangerous rip currents there, San Profit is the town's ocean rescue center and the only place to San Profit is the town's ocean rescue director. The messaging is say out of the ocean. Aaron exploded this weekend, intensifying from a Category 1 to a powerful Category 5 and just over 24 hours. This Air Force video shows a Hurricane Hunter aircraft just after it pierced the eye of that Cat 5 storm. You know that was a wild ride getting that I that's what it looked like inside the eye. This is what it looked like 600 miles from the center. Boy, the surf has just been building on this coastline and the storm itself has now weakened thankfully to a Category 2 but the wind field. Has grown and it's predicted to continue to grow, which is only going to worsen the impacts, not just here, but up and down the East Coast.
