The Independence Police Department has provided all its officers with AEDs, emphasizing the importance of rapid response in cardiac emergencies.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by local healthcare providers and community groups, who have supplied 138 AEDs to law enforcement agencies across the region. The move was inspired by recent high-profile incidents where AEDs played a crucial role in saving lives, and aims to ensure that officers are prepared to respond effectively to cardiac emergencies.

This is how they typically set up the Avive AED. All 40 plus officers at the Independence Police Department now have one to take home. It's super simple for officers who aren't medically trained. Officer Whitney Berger says these portable devices are critical. She would know. Because in November 2024, she used one to save a life. I got a call for 30 year old man unresponsive. Berger was with Alexandria police. Then she had no formal training with AED's because they only arrived at the department two days earlier. From the moment I got the call to putting the pads on him, I think they said it was like a six minute difference from the turning on to the shock advised. It was like a minute or 58 seconds. Minutes matter for every minute that someone doesn't get CPR and defibrillator. We see a remarkable about 10% drop in their expected survival. Doctor Travis Huffman is a cardiologist with Saint Elizabeth Health Care. The network partnered with Christ Hospital and local Rotary Clubs last fall to purchase 138 AED's for law enforcement agencies across northern Kentucky. An effort sparked by this unforgettable moment and that is DeMar Hamlin. A defibrillator saved this man's life, right? And so we saw this with our own eyes here in our city. We got the phone call and then from there it was off to the races and we wanted to find any way to make it happen. That was a vive CEO, Jameer Jaffrey. The success story is now the blueprint. Inspiring a new push, not just to equip every cruiser, but every officer to pull that out and you put the new pads in and then as soon as you click it in, it registers it as reset and it's ready to go in independence.
