Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the deployment of statewide California Highway Patrol (CHP) crime suppression teams to major cities, including San Diego, Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, Central Valley, Sacramento, and San Francisco. The initiative is designed to increase CHP presence, use data-driven policing, and disrupt organized crime, with teams working closely alongside local law enforcement agencies.

The suppression teams will consist of at least 15 members, including canine units, lieutenants, sergeants, and officers, and will focus on targeted enforcement in high crime areas. Newsom emphasized that this approach differs from previous federal deployments by collaborating with local authorities rather than acting unilaterally. The program is already active in cities such as Bakersfield, Oakland, and San Bernardino.

ABC 10 News reporter Ava Kirshner spoke with San Diego authorities about what the extra enforcement will look like. When you think about San Diego to the words high crime area come to mind. Apparently that's the case for the governor's office. Newsome is planning to deploy crime suppression teams to major cities across California, including America's finest. There's a few places in San Diego that definitely have some increased crime. But overall, I think San Diego is actually one of the safer counties across California. San Diego will join Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, Central Valley, Sacramento and San Francisco in Newsome's crime crackdown, causing some to ask why it's one is it's important to include all big cities. But also when you start doing suppression, people can start moving to other areas. So imagine if San Diego got left alone and then all of a sudden people started coming down to San Diego, seeing it as a target. According to the governor's office, the suppression teams will increase CHP presence, use data and intelligence led policing and disrupt organized crime. CHP also tells us quote our plan is to respond with targeted enforcement. We will go into high crime areas and increase visible patrols and quote minimum teams of 15. They'll include canine teams will include lieutenants, sergeants and 10 plus officers will surge up. The teams will collaborate with local law enforcement. Something Newsome says differs this initiative from President Donald Trump's deployment of the National Guard in Washington D. C. As it relates to the president in particular, he's doing things to people, not with people. It's a point of profound and consequential contrast. He's the fact of militarizing American cities. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office told ABC 10 News in part quote, we anticipate having additional resources from the California Highway Patrol will augment what we already are doing to keep our communities safe and quote, I think that, you know, at the state level, CHP, for example, they work very, very well. All the law enforcement in California have really strong collaboration and I think they're all going to hold hands very, very well.
