We learned today the suspect fired more than 100 rounds from a rifle at the church, where students at Annunciation Catholic School attended morning mass. City and state officials highlighted this fact as they called for stricter gun control. Usher Qureshi joins me now from Minneapolis. So Usher, what do we know about the weapons and the ammunition that was used? Well, John, we knew a shotgun rifle and pistol were recovered at the scene, but now we're getting a sense of just how many shots were fired. Minneapolis's police chief said today they recovered three shotgun shells, 116 rifle rounds and a live handgun round that they believe jammed in the chamber. Authorities call the amount of ammunition a clear sign the shooter came prepared for mass casualties. Now, investigators collected hundreds of pieces of evidence, including electronic devices that still need to be searched. Authorities say this was an unthinkable, completely senseless act. The shooter left behind disturbing writings and deranged a deranged fascination with past mass shootings. Investigators say they believe part of the purpose was to gain notoriety. They stress the investigation is far from over and may not provide the clear answers the public is hoping for. But the search for a specific motive continues. Now, sure. How is the city of Minneapolis processing reacting to this? Well, the message from leaders today here has been clear. They say this can't be just another tragic cycle of violence and grief without change. Officials like Mayor Jacob Frye are calling for stronger action at the state and federal level and even coordination between cities. That includes bans on assault weapons and high capacity magazines. He said no one needs the kind of firepower designed for the battlefield. This afternoon, the mayor gathered with other lawmakers and community advocates who pointed to the trauma the children in this shooting will now face, arguing that no civilian should have to face weapons capable of firing dozens of rounds in seconds. We also spoke with Representative Ilhan Omar, who has voted for a federal ban on assault weapons in the past. She said, in her opinion, it's not too complex of a problem to solve with legislation. The bottom line from many here, the courage shown by children protecting one another should be matched by the courage of lawmakers to act.
